The Ocean CleanUp

Every year, the money raised from the CampusRun goes to a good cause. This year the charity is The Ocean CleanUp, a company that specializes in developing technologies to remove plastic from the oceans. There are currently more than five trillion pieces of plastic in the oceans. There are five places in the ocean where all this plastic is accumulating. If the plastic is not removed from these circulations, it will impact ecosystems, health and economies for decades or even centuries. That is why it is so important that in addition to no more plastic entering the ocean, the current plastic is also removed. Ocean CleanUp does this, for example, by creating an artificial coastline that concentrates the plastic. This is a long U-shaped barrier that directs the plastic at the end into a retention zone. Through active propulsion, this system maintains a slow forward speed. When this entire system is full, the back of the retention zone is brought on board, detached from the system and placed on board the ship. The retention zone is then put back into place and cleanup can continue.

With our help, The Ocean CleanUp can work towards a future where plastic no longer pollutes our oceans. As mentioned above, this is possible by cleaning up what is already there and preventing plastic from flowing into the ocean via rivers.
